Powders and granules pose challenges in a wide range of instances, such as snow avalanches and landslides in nature to blockage of silos and flow irregularities in manufacturing industries. Over the last two decades, there has been considerable progress in modelling powders and granular materials along two routes: 1) better understanding of the particle-scale origins of the complex behaviour of these materials, and 2) increasing effort towards their realistic modelling by accounting for cohesive interactions, particle shapes, partial or full saturation by a fluid phase and particle fracture. Developments along these routes have emerged jointly from the physics and engineering communities, based on studies of a range of materials from model granular media to powders and soils. This workshop, organised by the University of Montpellier in collaboration with the University of Leeds is intended to bring those communities together to focus on challenges and new scopes in modelling powders and granular materials and their characterisation. The 2-day workshop programme in Montpellier will be composed several invited talks and contributed talks.
